weekend. It was very good, and despite not having seen any of the
other films OR having read any of the books, I still appreciated and
understood (I think) all of it.
The friends with whom I saw it were slightly incredulous that I was so
out of the loop. I may have to start reading the books...

I'm more or less in your boat. I've read the first three books (though just this past spring) and I gave them up because the characters never changed; they were just themselves having more "adventures". But I do want to see the new film.
